A Coaching Case Example

Sasha (not their real name) is a senior lecturer at a large metropolitan university. The position involves them working with students in academic tutorials, research projects, and giving lectures. Sasha is part of a small team of lecturers who are paired up for a semester to team teach twice weekly tutorials for their groups of students.

Sasha came to me because although she loves being a lecturer, she is finding it difficult to work with the team member she have been paired with. In particular, communication has become a problem. This wasn’t always the case. When Sasha and the teaching partner worked together in the classroom on campus, Sasha was happy and comfortable with their partnership and enjoyed the working environment. But that changed when they shifted to fully online teaching and most of their work communication was done via email. In short, Sasha conveyed that she felt different now; the emails she received were demanding and the language was abrupt and negative. This made her feel unhappy in her work, uncooperative in the teaching partnership, and resulted in her only emailing her work partner when she really had to.

I asked Sasha to think about her colleague and then try out three different mindsets for about one minute each:

1. I think this person is a problem;

2. I think this person has a problem;

3. I think this person is on a learning journey and is capable, resourceful, and full of potential.

Next, I asked Sasha what she noticed as she was thinking about this person using the three different mindsets, specifically her different feelings and emotions. Sasha said that she felt much calmer when she used the third mindset and recognised that the change had happened with the switch from on-campus to online teaching as well as online communicating. She also realised that she and her teaching partner were experiencing a lot of change and embarking on a learning journey; one that they could support each other on.

At the end of the coaching session, Sasha had decided to try a different medium of communication–short virtual meetings using video–to discuss teaching challenges and opportunities with her teaching partner. When we next met, she talked about how the work partnership was getting back on track and over the past week they had rarely used email. In addition, they found a teamwork app that had a chat function so that they could quickly catch up or swap ideas. According to Sasha, the action of intentionally adopting a different mindset was difficult to begin with but she was aware that it helped her shift her feelings and attitude to a much more positive and productive way of thinking and working. Had communication improved? Most definitely was Sasha’s feedback.

How many coaching sessions will I need?

Once you have found the right coach, six to twelve coaching sessions are common ranging from 40 minutes for laser coaching to 1 hour for a traditional coaching session. These sessions could happen over one month or one year and are negotiated in partnership with your coach. Coaching sessions are face to face and most coaches are flexible in interacting with you in a physical or online space or by a mixture of both.

The coaching exercise was developed by internationally recognised performance coach, Sir John Whitmore.
